A week or two ago Charles cracked his plastic army helmet. This made him very sad. We thought about buying him a new one but Mom said “see if Dad can fix it”. I have recently started working rockets again and wanted to freshen my fiberglassing skills so I decided to try fixing the helmet that way. Charles was initially reluctant but I managed to persuade him to take the chance. We worked on it sort of together because teaching your boy about epoxy is the sort of thing a Dad should do. Charles liked wearing the latex gloves at least and I managed to get the fiberglass on in roughly the right places without too much embarrassment. We left it to cure overnight and it was looking pretty good in the morning. Later the fiberglass detached a bit from the helmet (it’s a bad type of plastic for epoxy adhesion) but it’s still intact. I think we got lucky and some of the epoxy oozed into the crack so that it’s still sticking in the critical locations. Charles thought it looked cool when it was done, much more “battle hardened”.
