What is that?

That’s an opossum which are quite common around here. Surprising to me, that is not at all the same thing as a possum so I will have to be more careful with my nomenclature in the future.

I should make a list sometime of the wild life I have seen at the house and in the neighborhood. But a partial list is

  • Squirrel
  • Opossum
  • Rabbit
  • Deer
  • Coyote
  • Fox
  • Pheasant
  • Egret
  • Goose
  • Duck
  • Racoon
  • Hedgehog
  • Hawk
  • Chipmunk

I saw a muskrat once, on campus, but that was 15-20 years ago. I have also seen owls in the area but not near the house.

I see hawks (red-tailed, I think) all the time. They like to hang out on the top of fence posts along roads.

I still think he’s ugly!

You saw a ground hog, not a hedge hog. I think hedge hogs only live in Europe.

On the bird front, we get blue herons. There were some hanging around the pond last year.

We have mostly red tailed hawks around here. But I’ve seen smaller raptors (falcons?) around too.
